When you think of the future, what do you see? Perhaps you have a clear vision in your head of what’s coming your way, or maybe you’re leaving it all up to chance. If you’re in the latter category, it could be time to rethink your strategy. While having a rigid plan for the future may not be the best idea, having a rough idea of where you’d like to be, who with, and what you’d like to be doing is essential. Otherwise, you may quickly enter your senior years, realising they snuck up on you and that you weren’t prepared enough. There are many older people out there who are struggling and not enjoying their circumstances. Your ideal future won’t just land in your lap, nor will a just ‘ok’ future. If you’d like to make sure you are heading towards the future you want to live, read to discover five reasons why planning your future is essential for a happier life.
VISUALISE YOUR FUTURE

Sit and immerse yourself in your idea of the future. What does it look like? You could even write it down or develop a vision board that matches the picture in your head. Find what feels right to you, and don’t be pressured to go for somebody else’s idea of the ideal future.
HAVE A CONVERSATION WITH YOUR FAMILY

Once you have an idea of what you want your future to look like, have a conversation with your family. They may not be the most straightforward conversations, but they are essential. Chat with them if you have a partner and ensure your vision aligns. Maybe you would need to compromise a little, but try to reach a satisfactory conclusion for both of you. Discussing what you expect to happen with your kids can ensure fewer misunderstandings and even arguments later on down the line. For example, you should give them a good idea of whether you would like to go into a home should you need help or hire live-in care so you can stay in your home.
BREAK DOWN YOUR PLAN STEP-BY-STEP

Now you know where you want to end up, figure out your plan. It’s essential to break this down, so each step seems more manageable. The more manageable a step appears, the more likely you will take it. Baby steps are excellent as long as you are moving forwards.
STAY ACCOUNTABLE

Make sure you check in with your family to stay accountable and focused on your goals. If it seems far away, this goal might fall to the wayside, and nobody checks in on you.

Depending on how long you have until retirement or your future goal, you may need to make adjustments. Nobody is saying you shouldn’t dream big, but coming up with a bit of leeway plan will help you feel better about the situation and help you stay the course.
