3 tips for coping through the pandemic

The pandemic has been extremely difficult for all of us. Nobody could have anticipated the rapid spread of coronavirus and Covid-19 worldwide. Just over a year ago, many of us were unaware it existed. Now, it’s the topic on most of our lips almost every day. A year ago, when governments worldwide started implementing lockdown measures to slow the spread of the virus, few of us would have believed that we’d be in a similar situation a whole year down the line. Of course, it’s essential to stay positive. Vaccines have been developed and are being rolled out, so hopefully, we will be on track to a return to normality. But in the meantime, you must take active steps to manage your life during the pandemic and stay as happy and healthy as possible despite the virus. Here are three tips for coping with the pandemic and some suggestions that may help you along the way.

DEALING WITH LOSS

Of course, the central tragedy of this pandemic has been the loss of life. Vast numbers of people have died at the hands of the coronavirus, and, unfortunately, many know (or know of) someone who lost their life. If you have experienced the loss of someone near you, it’s essential to know that it’s okay to grieve. It would be best if you took the time to accept the loss and process it. It’s also important to understand that the grieving process has no time limit. Different people cope with loss in different ways. Regardless, this is likely to be an overwhelming and challenging experience where you have to arrange funerals, inform others and accept the loss yourself. Remember that there are many forms of support out there, so don’t hesitate to reach out to them if you need them. Doctors, therapists, support groups, charities and helplines are just a few examples.

DEALING WITH FINANCIAL DIFFICULTIES

The pandemic has resulted in mass job loss and unemployment. Whether that involves companies collapsing, companies making staff redundant or companies offering reduced hours or salaries. If you’re facing financial difficulty, you’re not alone. There are sources of support for you out there. Alongside taking logical measures like tightening your budget and seeking extra work or alternative sources of income, you should be aware of government schemes implemented to help those in need. Do your research and apply to anything you are entitled to or eligible for.

DEALING WITH LONELINESS AND ISOLATION

Governments worldwide have implemented at-home measures, social isolation measures and social distancing measures to minimise the spread of the virus until the vaccine has been rolled out. This is logical. But at the same time, it has resulted in mass loneliness. The good news is that we’re living in a technological age. Keep in touch with others through video chats, phone calls, messages or even through gaming platforms.
